Why ‘Girls Trip’ Just Made ‘The Hangover’ Look Like A Kids’ Movie

Have you and your girlfriends been to see Girls Trip this weekend? My Facebook timeline has blown up with groups of beautiful women grabbing their girls and heading to the movies. And then they’re off to drinks to talk about it!

If you haven’t heard of Girls Trip, you are in for some fun. This movie stars Queen Latifah, Jada Pinkett-Smith, Regina Hall, and newcomer comedian Tiffany Haddish. While Tiffany may be relatively new to the big screen (she was in Keanu and Meet the Spartans), she will be someone to watch. She stole the show in this hilarious dirty comedy.

Why is Girls Trip the new Hangover?

Up until now, we did not see successful black women in movies doing anything that seemed undignified. Either the woman was already a “ho”, or they were labeled as such by the end of the movie. But in Girls Trip, all four women lead accomplished lives- college graduates, upper middle class status, and thriving careers.

But when they get together for a girls’ weekend at Essence Festival in New Orleans and get a little liquid courage, all respectability goes out the window. And it is funny as heck* to watch!

*Side note: there are at least three words I could have used there instead of “heck”. If you are offended by any other possibility, Girls Trip is not for you. They sling expletives in this movie like beads at Mardi Gras.

In The Hangover, four friends hit Vegas for a bachelor party weekend, and they get into some hilarious situations after consuming what they thought was a shot, but it turns out to be laced with rohypnol, the date rape drug. Similarly, the Girls Trip ladies unknowingly drink absinthe, a high-proof alcohol known for drug-inducing properties, and they go into hallucinogenic episodes while partying. It’s brilliant to watch, because we just don’t see that kind of behavior in black women.

Some of the most raunchy scenes include wild child Dina (Tiffany Haddish) showing prudish single mom Lisa (Jada Pinkett-Smith) how to please a man with her mouth.

Would I go see Girls Trip Again?

Absolutely! In fact, as I am writing this, I am planning to take my husband to check it out while my son is at a baseball game. And yes, men will enjoy this movie as well. In fact, when I saw it on Friday with some girlfriends, I was surprised at how many men were in the theater.

I know I missed some of the jokes because I was still laughing from the last ones. So today’s second showing of the movie will be even more funny. I will give you an update after the second viewing.

Let me know in the comments what you think of Girls Trip. Love it or hate it?

Can’t wait to see it! We might go tonight while on vacation.

I’ll be honest, I did NOT think I was going to enjoy this movie. I cringe at super corny movies, but the commercials did this movie no justice! It’s so refreshing to see black women being portrayed as educated and successful for once.

I know exactly what you mean. I felt the same way too, but I ended up going with girlfriends and enjoying it so much! Glad you liked it 🙂
